Remote Constant Current Driver - series wired version

A constant current remote driver system is the most efficient and cost effective way of powering HUNZA PURE LED fixtures, however the installation requirements are a little different from traditional methods.

 

When using a remote constant current driver, it is very important to note that the fixtures need to be wired in series instead of the more traditional parallel wiring systems. This LED Wiring System Diagram shows the difference between these two wiring systems.

When it comes to selecting the correct driver for your series circuit we advise not to focus on the wattage of the LEDs but on the forward voltage of the LED used in the fixture. This a constant current system therefore the current does not change, instead the forward voltage increases as LEDs are added to the circuit. You MUST NOT use a driver that has a minimum output voltage higher than the LED total voltage load.  For example, if the driver voltage range is 8 – 26 volts forward (Uout=8-26vdc) and the total LED voltage load is only 6vF then the driver will overload the LED.

 

In most situations, it is highly recommended that remote driver should be installed inside a waterproof enclosure. This helps to protect the driver and connections against the weather and provides extra safety.

 

Dimming:

All Hunza Series version fixtures are dimmable however it is important that the correct combination of dimmer and remote driver is used. The Remote Driver Selection Chart  show the correct type of dimmer required for the selected driver. Please check the specification sheets for each driver as there may be some different options available and it may also pay to check with the supplier of the dimmer to see if there are any compatibility issues.

 

The best dimming performance will be achieved with 0-10v or Dali dimming/control systems, however these require an extra set of wires to be connected between the driver and control system.

 

Some smart control systems require a bridging component to suit the type of driver dimming type. These are available from the control system supplier.

 

Triac and ELV drivers may only allow dimming down to about 30% of full brightness.

 

Voltage Drop Calculations:

Please see the following examples that demonstrate some typical driver calculation situations, and you may also like to consult our HUNZA PURE LED Remote Driver Voltage Drop Chart for specific information on distances and cable sizes.

 

Example 1:

A customer has 4 x HUNZA SS/L (Spike Spot PURE LED). These fixtures use Cree MTG LEDs, which have a 6vF (volts forward) requirement. MTG LEDs can be driven at 350, 700 or 1000mA. In this example the customer wants to drive the fixtures at 700mA and he has four fixtures in the circuit.

 

We recommend our HUN1050DALI model from the table above rated at 700mA with a forward voltage range of 0 – 71 volts (Uout=0-71vdc), and we calculate the driver specification as follows:

 

As the driver is constant current at 700mA all that needs to be calculated is the forward voltage required i.e.: 4 x SS/L fixtures at 6vF = 24vF. This falls well within the HUN1050DALI driver range of 0-71 forward volts.

 

The calculation to check the maximum number of fixtures allowable is as follows:

 

71v (maximum driver voltage output) divided by 6 (LED forward voltage) = 11 fixtures maximum with 5 volts spare for cable voltage drop. For additional protection against the likelihood of cable voltage drop, we could limit the maximum to 10 fixtures and this will give 11 volts spare.

 

Example 2. 

A customer has 8 x HUNZA BL/L (Border Lite PURE LED). These fixtures use Cree XTE LEDs which have a 3vF (volts forward) requirement. XTE LEDs can be driven at 350 or 700mA. For this example the customer wants to drive the fixtures at 350mA and he has six fixtures in the circuit.

 

We recommend our HUN1050DALI model from the table above rated at 350mA with a forward voltage range of 0 – 74 volts (Uout=0-74vdc), and we calculate the driver specification as follows:

 

As the driver is constant current at 350mA all that needs to be calculated is the forward voltage required, i.e.: 8 x BL/L fixtures at 3vF = 24vF. Again, this falls well within the HUN1050DALI driver range of 0-74 forward volts.

 

The calculation to check the maximum number of fixtures allowable is as follows:

 

74v (maximum driver voltage output) divided by 3 (LED forward voltage) = 23 fixtures maximum with 5 volts spare for cable voltage drop. For additional protection against the likelihood of cable voltage drop, we could limit the maximum to 22 fixtures and this will give 8 volts spare.
