FAQ

Cable & Electrical

It is important to use cable that is manufactured for outdoor use. Speaker cable and indoor house wiring cable are generally not produced to withstand fertilizers and pesticides. Many will also become brittle in sunlight due to UV exposure. This can cause serious risk of fire if the cable sheathing perishes.

Recommendation: Always use UV-resistant, outdoor-rated cable specifically designed for landscape lighting applications.

Our fixtures are available in a range of voltage and current inputs to best suit the needs of your installation.

PureLED Constant Current (1050mA/700mA/350mA): This is our predominant solution today as it’s the native power format LEDs are produced in. This format is the most efficient, runs at the lowest temperature and has no short-life electrical components. The mains/line to constant current driver is generally housed in an accessible location for easy servicing and replacement. The LED will last 4–5x longer than the primary driver. Constant current circuits are excellent for long cable runs due to very low current and resistance.

PureLED 12V AC and 24V DC: We also supply these solutions for most of our range. In this format, there’s a small constant voltage to constant current device inside the LED fixture. These formats follow more conventional wiring – they’re wired in parallel, making them perfect for retrofit installations where previous MR16 12V fixtures have been installed.

Historical Options: Hunza fixtures have been available with MR16 12VAC lamps and transformers to operate from either 110V or 240V mains. We supply retrofit 12V AC lamps and transformers to support fixtures built with MR16 halogen-style lamp holders. GU10 versions (mains/line voltage direct) are also still supported today with retrofit LED GU10 lamps.

For 12VAC systems: Obtain from your local Hunza stockist a free Hunza cable calculator which will calculate volt drop, cable size and cable distance. You can also download a simple 12V AC volt drop chart from our website.

For constant current systems: Please contact your local distributor for professional advice. They will help you select an appropriate driver for the electrical load. There will often be enough spare voltage on a constant current output that you can run hundreds of meter circuits on very small conductors.

Installation & Setup

It’s a simple calculation: if you have a 100W 12V AC transformer, you can operate up to:

  • 16 × 6W 12V AC lamps (100W ÷ 6W = 16.67 lights, round down to 16)
  • 33 × 3W 12V AC lamps (100W ÷ 3W = 33.33 lights, round down to 33)

Important: Always round down to the nearest whole number when calculating maximum fixtures per transformer.

Constant current drivers have a maximum and minimum voltage load range (e.g., 2–58V, 35–48V, 9–28V).

Calculation steps:

  1. Check the maximum current specified for your fixture
  2. Look at driver options for that constant current region (typically 350mA, 700mA, 1050mA, 1400mA)
  3. Refer to the specification sheet for the forward voltage of the LED (written as XvF, e.g., a Hunza 6W 1050mA module is 6vF)
  4. Check the driver’s minimum and maximum voltage range

Example with 6vF LED:

  • Driver A (2–58V): 1–9 fixtures (always round minimum up, maximum down)
  • Driver B (35–48V): 6–7 fixtures
  • Driver C (9–28V): 2–4 fixtures

Important: Never use 100% of available voltage. Allow for cable losses. More spare voltage allows smaller conductors.

This depends on your desired light level and ambient lighting. Like sound (you can hear a pin drop in a quiet room but not in a bustling city), lighting is accumulative. Individual luminaire impact depends on the full lighting environment.

To determine needs:

  • Refer to individual product pages and download specification sheets
  • Check page 2 for light pattern diagrams showing fixture output
  • Use diagrams to decide how many lights you need
  • Alternatively, contact your local distributor for professional advice

Yes. We recommend that a qualified electrician installs transformers and fixtures. Check that they have experience installing low voltage outdoor fixtures.

Performance & Features

PureLED Constant Current: Dimmable pending selection and pairing of a dimmable driver. Many have either 0–10V or Triac dimming on board.

PureLED 12V AC: Need wire wound transformer pairing. Test with your dimmer options before purchase for best dimming range.

PureLED 24V DC: Only dimmable on prior arrangement, generally DALI dimming.

MR16 and GU10 retrofit lamps: Available in dimming formats. Hunza stocks Soraa MR16 and GU10 lamps (conventionally dimmable). Promus MR16 and GU10 are not dimmable.

LED Fixtures: LEDs generate heat but are significantly more efficient than traditional sources. LEDs prefer to remain cool and don’t perform well if junction temperature exceeds 80°C. Hunza products use metal housings to draw heat away from LEDs, so housings may feel warm to touch. High wattage LED fixture housings won’t exceed 60°C and generally feel lightly warm.

Halogen Fixtures: Can become quite hot. Always place fixtures to minimize bare skin contact. Hunza offers low-heat LED alternatives.

Yes, all our fixtures are waterproof, but ratings vary between models.

  • Minimum rating: IP56 for all fixtures
  • Pool and Pond Lites: IP68 for submerged locations

Important: All Hunza luminaires are designed for outdoor use. Installers must use appropriate waterproofing techniques and ensure all insulation layers are properly sealed.

12V Systems: Very safe – the same 12V system used in cars. Ideal for gardens where cabling could be compromised by maintenance.

Constant Current Systems: Require careful driver selection to match local regulations. High voltage output drivers may require cable protection. Contact local distributor for advice.

110V–240V AC Installations: Require professional installation and local accreditation.

Additional Safety: Hunza fixtures comply with safety and electrical standards worldwide.

Materials & Durability

316 Stainless Steel (Electro-polished): Hunza strongly recommends for longevity and style. Electro-polishing increases surface protection by up to 33% and reduces maintenance, especially in high-risk environments like salt-laden air areas.

Copper: Extremely hardy with excellent corrosion resistance. Natural patina creates a self-healing protective surface for graceful aging.

Primarily Aluminium, Copper, or 316 Stainless Steel. These options are not available for all fixtures. Please refer to individual product pages for details.

Copper and Bronze: Very durable, ideal for most landscape work. Require no maintenance and weather to a patina that blends beautifully into gardens.

316 Stainless Steel: Works well on contemporary buildings and pathways. May require regular cleaning to avoid surface staining near the sea.

Visit our Lighting Clinic for more information. Note: These options are not available for all fixtures – check individual product pages.

Maintenance & Upgrades

Yes, in most cases our light fittings can be easily upgraded to LED. Please contact your local distributor for professional advice.

Many Hunza fixtures include an Anti-Syphon moisture barrier system. This prevents water being drawn up cables if poor-quality (non-watertight) cable joints are made by installers.

How it happens: All fixtures heat up while running. When they cool, air inside cools and creates a vacuum. This vacuum applies pressure to cables and tries to draw in moisture-laden air.

Contact your local distributor for advice on fixture selection and optional accessories.

Hunza PureLED Modules & PCB: Available from your local distributor.

MR16 and GU10 lamps: Available from supermarkets, lighting stores, electrical wholesalers, and building supply warehouses.

Important: Purchase quality brands for long lamp life, good color rendition, and suitability for enclosed fixtures. Most retrofit MR16 and GU10 on the market are not suitable for enclosed waterproof fixtures.

Technical Specifications

It’s the spread of light that reflector lamps project. Hunza 6W fixtures are available with:

  • 10°: Narrowest beam (spotlight effect)
  • 36°: Medium beam (floodlight effect)
  • 60°: Widest beam (wide flood effect)
